Matt Barnable

International Representative

Matthew Barnable serves as an IAM International Representative assigned to Atlantic Canada, supporting IAM members, locals, and organizing efforts across the East Coast. Appointed to the role in 2021, Barnable brings extensive union experience, a strong labour background, and a deep commitment to member advocacy.

A member of IAM Local 99 since 2011, Barnable began his career as a Material Supply Assistant at Finning in Fort McMurray before completing his apprenticeship and earning his Journeyman Red Seal certification as a parts technician. He became active in the union early in his career, serving as a Shop Steward and later holding several leadership positions, including Recording Secretary, Conductor-Sentinel, and Chief Shop Steward.

In 2018, Barnable was elected as a Business Representative and Organizer, where he gained experience negotiating collective agreements, handling grievances, supporting members, and helping grow IAM’s presence in Alberta.

Passionate about the labour movement, he has also taken on leadership roles within the broader labour community, including serving as Vice-President of the Alberta Federation of Labour, a delegate to the Edmonton and District Labour Council, and a facilitator for shop steward training through the Edmonton District Labour School.

Originally from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Barnable brings his knowledge, experience, and dedication to strengthening IAM’s presence and supporting members throughout Atlantic Canada. He currently also serves as Second Vice-President of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour.
